Tributes have been paid to journalist Aodhan O’Faolain, who sadly passed away tonight. The 50-year-old was well-known for his reporting on many important High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court cases for all national news organizations in Ireland. Mr. O’Faolain, who lived in south Co Dublin, died at St Vincent’s University Hospital after being diagnosed with cancer last year. Attorney General Rossa Fanning praised Mr. O’Faolain as “a scrupulously fair court journalist who documented the ebb and flow of Ireland’s economy from the journalist’s bench in the High Court’s Chancery list,” RTE reports. Irish Mirror and Dublin Live reporter Michael O’Toole also shared his condolences, saying: “Really sad to hear this. Aodhan was a super reporter and a wonderful man. RIP.” Mr. O’Faolain worked for the Clonmel Nationalist newspaper and even spent nearly two years teaching at a top secondary school in Japan. He was born in Galway but grew up in Athlone. He is survived by his wife Janet, his father Mícheál, mother Maura, and his brothers Eoin and Ronan.

Not really sure why this matters, but Aodhan O’Faolain’s untimely passing has left a void in the journalism community. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like Mr. O’Faolain led quite an interesting life outside of journalism. Teaching in Japan and growing up in different parts of Ireland must have shaped his perspective in unique ways.
