Improving Active Travel Routes in Castleknock

In an effort to enhance the accessibility and safety of active travel routes in the Castleknock community, a proposed plan has been put forward by the Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Brian McDonagh. The plan aims to provide a network of walking and cycling paths that cater to individuals of all abilities, promoting a sense of security and ease for those choosing to walk or wheel in the area. This initiative also seeks to better connect residents to local amenities such as shopping centers, schools, sports facilities, and public transportation options for both daily commuting and longer journeys.

Mayor McDonagh emphasized the importance of prioritizing active travel infrastructure in communities, citing evidence from various locations in Europe and Ireland where such initiatives have been successful. He stated, “Communities are increasingly seeking improved walking and cycling facilities, and it is our responsibility to meet these demands. By implementing features like cycle lanes, footpaths, safe crossings, and cycle-friendly roundabouts, we aim to make walking and wheeling the preferred mode of transportation for as many individuals as possible.”

Significant Investment in the Castleknock Area

The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly, highlighted the significance of the proposed Auburn Avenue to 12th Lock Walking and Cycling Route as a substantial investment in the Castleknock area. Collaborating with the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI), the council conducted research to better understand how to encourage residents to shift from car dependency to walking or cycling for local trips. The findings indicated that access to high-quality walking routes and cycle lanes can significantly influence individuals’ transportation choices.

Farrelly noted, “By expanding and enhancing the network of footpaths and cycle lanes in Dublin 15, we are driving positive change within Fingal. Our goal is to create a sustainable and active transportation system that benefits both residents and the environment.”

Designing with Local Needs in Mind

David Storey, Director of Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel, and Sports Department, shed light on the design aspects of the proposed route, emphasizing the incorporation of local needs and safety considerations. The scheme includes over 2km of new protected cycle lanes and upgraded footpaths, as well as crucial road safety improvements tailored to address the specific requirements of the area.

Storey explained, “Our focus is on enhancing the safety of vulnerable road users, including children, individuals with reduced mobility, and older adults. By implementing measures such as traffic calming, shorter road crossing distances, zebra crossings, and modifications to bus stops to minimize conflicts between cyclists and buses, we are paving the way for a safer and more inclusive active travel environment.”

Community Engagement and Public Consultation

Fingal County Council has taken proactive steps to engage with local residents, businesses, and community organizations regarding the proposed active travel route plan. Letters have been sent out to notify stakeholders about the scheme, inviting them to participate in the public consultation process.

The public consultation period will remain open until 23.59hrs on Friday, September 13th, 2024. Residents, businesses, community groups, and other interested parties are encouraged to review the proposal and provide feedback to the council. Submissions can be made online through the Fingal consultation portal or via email/post to the project team.
