A dad-of-three who’s accused of being involved in an attack where a guy got chased into a house and ended up losing two fingers in Dublin has been given bail. Bernard Mongan Sr, a widower aged 42 from Deansrath Grove, Clondalkin, appeared in Dublin District Court charged with assault causing harm, wielding a weapon, and burglary. He’s the third person to face the music over the incident, which went down on May 9 in Clondalkin. The judge heard that a claw hammer, a machete, and some nasty acid were used in the attack.
The police officer, Garda Shane O’Brien, spilled the beans to Judge William Aylmer that a bunch of armed dudes had been hot on the heels of the 29-year-old man for about 25 minutes in the Bawnogue area of Clondalkin. The poor guy tried to make a run for it on foot until he found sanctuary in a stranger’s crib at Kilcronan View. During a heated bail hearing, it came out that as the injured man dashed into the house, he begged the homeowner to call the cops and an ambulance before he was ambushed by a gang of guys. The homeowner heard the man screaming inside, “leave me alone, leave me alone.”
The investigating officer, Garda O’Brien, brought up the severity of the case and the solid evidence they had, including CCTV footage from the scene. They claimed one of the gang had a machete, while Mr. Mongan Sr was supposedly armed with a claw hammer and a bottle of maybe-ammonia. It was said that when the man sought refuge in the house, he got attacked in a child’s room, resulting in “life-changing injuries” to two fingers. The man’s thumb and index finger on his left hand got chopped off, and his middle finger was sliced to the bone. The poor dude was treated at the hospital, but he couldn’t show his face in court due to infection worries.
