A 22-year-old man, Dean Harte, has recently been sentenced to a 17-month suspended sentence for careless driving causing the death of Ciarán Keating, brother of Boyzone singer Ronan Keating. The tragic incident occurred when Harte’s Audi A3 veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with a Ford Focus driven by Ciarán Keating. The collision took place on the N5 at Ballymiles between Swinford and Bohola, resulting in the untimely death of Mr. Keating and leaving his wife, Annmarie, with life-threatening injuries.
The court proceedings unfolded in Castlebar Circuit Criminal Court, where Harte pleaded guilty to the charges of careless driving causing death and serious injury. During the sentencing hearing, Judge Eoin Garavan handed down a 17-month suspended prison sentence to Harte, along with a two-year driving ban. The judge took into account the fact that there was no evidence of intoxication or speeding at the time of the accident, nor any prior instances of dangerous driving by Harte, though he did consider a separate charge related to a low tire tread depth.
While there was no evidence of phone activity at the time of the collision, it was revealed that Harte had sent a WhatsApp message just prior to the tragic event. Additionally, trace elements of cannabis were found in his blood, with Harte admitting to consuming the substance a few nights before the accident. John Shortt, Harte’s counsel, described the incident as a “tragedy” and emphasized the genuine remorse expressed by his client, despite the rejection of his apology letter by the Keating family.
