The Rocklands/Milebush area in Castlebar has been highlighted as an area that has been neglected in terms of infrastructure for the past few decades. Councillor Harry Barrett raised concerns about the safety of residents and road users in the area at a recent Castlebar Municipal District meeting.

Residents have expressed worries about overgrown hedging, the lack of green bollards, and the general safety of multiple junctions in the area. They have also requested speed reduction signage near the entrance to Castlebar Golf Club. Councillor Barrett has called for immediate action to address these issues and has requested a detailed report on the plan for the wider area, including road markings, widening, and specific measures to be taken.

In particular, Councillor Barrett highlighted the dangerous ‘blind’ corner at the former site of Rice’s Garage. He also mentioned the issue of speeding on Balloor Road, especially since the opening of the new road, as a significant problem in the area.

Councillor Cyril Burke also brought attention to problems in Milebush, focusing on the need for a footpath to improve pedestrian safety in the area around Umbro Park. David Mellett, head of the municipal district, mentioned that the engineer has met with residents to discuss their concerns and suggested that they form a group to prioritize their needs. A report will be presented to the councillors based on these discussions.

It is clear that there are pressing issues in the Rocklands/Milebush area that need to be addressed to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and road users. The local council is taking steps to gather feedback from residents and develop a plan to improve the infrastructure in the area. By working together, the community and local authorities can create a safer and more accessible environment for everyone in Castlebar.
