Gender Differences in Gift Retention: Men Keep Unwanted Gifts More often than Women
New research from Ireland’s consumer watchdog, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), has shed light on the contrasting ways men and women handle unwanted gifts. According to the study, women are more likely to re-gift presents they don’t like, while men tend to either use them or leave them unopened.
Men vs. Women: Gift Retention Habits
In a pre-Christmas poll conducted by the CCPC, 35% of women admitted to re-gifting unwanted presents, compared to just 24% of men. On the other hand, men were almost twice as likely as women (23% vs. 14%) to use gifts they didn’t like. Surprisingly, men were also more prone to leaving unwanted gifts unopened, with 14% confessing to this habit compared to 9% of women.
Consumer Rights Awareness
The study also highlighted a lack of awareness among Irish shoppers regarding their rights when it comes to returning faulty goods. One in four shoppers mistakenly believed that manufacturers, not retailers, are solely responsible for faulty items. Additionally, 45% of respondents thought the return period for faulty goods depended on the length of the product guarantee, overlooking the fact that statutory rights always take precedence.
Know Your Rights: Returning Gifts
CCPC director of communications, GrĂ¡inne Griffin, emphasized the importance of understanding consumer rights, especially when returning gifts after Christmas. She pointed out that regardless of warranties or guarantees, retailers are obligated to address issues with faulty items. Consumers have up to six years of protection under Irish consumer rights law for faulty goods, and a 14-day cancellation window for online purchases.
Gift Receipts Matter
Interestingly, a third of respondents admitted to never including gift receipts with Christmas presents. This oversight could potentially complicate returns or exchanges, highlighting the importance of keeping track of receipts for a hassle-free gift-giving experience.
In a season filled with giving and receiving, it’s crucial to be informed about your rights as a consumer. Whether you’re contemplating re-gifting a present or returning a faulty item, knowing where you stand can make all the difference. So, next time you unwrap a gift that doesn’t quite hit the mark, remember to consider your options and make informed choices to ensure a stress-free holiday season.
