Former 2FM DJ Nikki Hayes, who used to host her own show on RTE 2FM from 2003 to 2010, recently shared her experience of avoiding jail time in connection to a money laundering scam. Last October, the Dubliner managed to escape a criminal conviction and prison sentence as the court acknowledged her vulnerability and the fact that she was manipulated into participating in the scam. It was revealed in court that around €15,000 was deposited into her bank account as part of the laundering scheme, but the money was later returned, and Nikki did not profit from the transaction. The judge commended her for her transformation and decided not to impose any sentence or criminal record on her.
In a candid interview, Nikki, whose real name is Eimear O’Keeffe, recounted the harrowing experience of facing the media frenzy after the court case. She described how her key worker accompanied her, providing support as they navigated through a crowd of cameras. Despite the challenges she faced, Nikki remained resilient and focused on moving forward. During her time as a radio DJ at RTÉ, Nikki admitted to struggling with alcohol addiction, consuming up to six bottles of wine daily while hosting her show from home during the Covid-19 pandemic. This destructive behavior eventually led to her losing her job and spiraling into homelessness. Recounting the nights she spent sleeping on the streets, Nikki vividly described the despair and isolation she felt, highlighting a poignant moment when she felt invisible among a crowd of revelers. The experience served as a wake-up call for Nikki, prompting her to seek help and embark on a rigorous 18-month rehabilitation program to overcome her substance abuse issues.
Now on the path to recovery, Nikki credits her 12-year-old daughter for being her source of motivation and strength. With a newfound sense of purpose, she is determined to rebuild her life and be present for her child.
