Flights from Derry to Dublin could possibly make a comeback next year, as hinted by a Minister of State. It seems like there used to be a daily flight between the two cities, but it got the boot back in 2011. Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue, spilled the beans on BBC Radio Foyle’s Mark Patterson Show, revealing ongoing talks to bring back the service by the end of 2026. He mentioned that the Irish government is all in and has set a timeline for this revival. He’s been in touch with the Minister for Transport and City of Derry management to make it happen because losing the flight has been a bummer for Derry, Donegal, and the whole north-west area.
The City of Derry Airport saw 48,000 passengers during the summer of 2023, according to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). It’s a far cry from the airport’s peak quarter in 2011, when nearly 130,000 travelers passed through from July to September. The Minister emphasized the importance of getting the flight back on track, highlighting the impact it has had on the region.
