development-plan-600-apartments-along-finglas-luas-route

A big planning application for a ginormous apartment development of more than 600 units in Finglas has been thrown in the ring with Dublin City Council. The blueprints for 607 residential units spread across five blocks are aiming to set up camp on the KSG Group Site over on McKee Avenue. These tall apartment buildings will vary in height, ranging from two all the way up to 10 storeys. One of the blocks is even planning to include 47 age-friendly apartments, while the rest will be a mix of one, two, and three bedroom units. And get this, they’re even thinking about throwing in some retail units and a creche for good measure. It’s like a one-stop-shop for all your needs!

Now, let’s talk about the bigger picture. This large-scale residential development is gunning for a 10-year planning permission to make its mark. And even though it’s presented as a single application, it actually fits snugly within the lands earmarked in the Jamestown masterplan, which is set to cozy up next to the Finglas Luas. The masterplan, given the thumbs up back in 2023, is all about buildings that reach up to six storeys high. But hey, this planning application is looking at a site that was initially pegged for three, possibly even eight storeys. Across the street, you’ve got the local residential houses chilling on McKee Avenue, most of them destined for three storeys high living.

Now, hold on to your hats because within this masterplan, there’s talk of a whopping 3,500-3,800 homes, a primary school, and a bunch of other facilities for the community. The whole shebang is set to roll out until 2028. But, not everyone is throwing a party over this development. Locals have taken to social media to air their concerns. One local resident had this to say: “This is going to shake up the whole vibe of Finglas with all these apartments popping up left, right, and center. You won’t be able to take a leisurely drive without getting stuck in a jam. How about giving us the Luas first and sorting out a solid plan before turning Finglas into a mini city?” And another local chimed in, saying, “Kids from Charlestown are making the trek to schools in Cabra, and they’re talking about throwing up more blocks without a school in sight? All these parents driving back and forth only add to the traffic madness because there’s no decent public transport connection. We need the Luas and schools before anything else.”

If you want to throw in your two cents on this, you’ve got until June 4 to make your voice heard. After that, Dublin City Council will work their magic and make a call.
