Children in Ireland are getting their first mobile phone at an average age of nine, a recent survey revealed. The study, conducted by telecommunications firm Eir and polling company Genesis, surveyed 522 parents and guardians with children under 16. It found that 42% of parents gave their children a phone earlier than they would have liked, primarily due to safety concerns.
Parents’ Concerns and Motivations
Parents cited safety and the need to stay in touch with their children as the main reasons for providing them with a mobile phone. Other factors included school requirements, peer pressure, and the presence of spare phones at home. Interestingly, parents under 35 and those living in Dublin and Leinster were more likely to give phones to their children at a younger age.
Challenges of Parental Control
Despite their intentions, many parents admitted to being unsure about accessing parental controls on their children’s devices. This lack of understanding poses a significant challenge when it comes to monitoring and managing children’s online activities. While 71% of parents believe their children can self-regulate their online behavior, recent reports suggest otherwise.
