Female Prison Officer Sentenced to Jail for Inmate Relationship

A 42-year-old female prison officer, Dawn MacCormack, has been handed a lengthy jail term for engaging in an “intimate” relationship with an inmate at HMP The Mount in Hertfordshire. The scandalous affair with prisoner Josh Moore began in January 2019 while MacCormack was working at the correctional facility near Hemel Hempstead. The illicit relationship came to light when detectives discovered that Moore had possession of two smuggled phones inside the prison, through which the pair exchanged a staggering 4,500 texts and calls over a period of just over a month in 2019, according to Hertfordshire Police.

Discovery and Legal Proceedings

The inappropriate relationship between MacCormack and Moore was eventually uncovered, leading to MacCormack being charged in June 2020. Following a nine-day trial at St Albans Crown Court in July of this year, she was found guilty of misconduct in public office and subsequently sentenced to 26 months in prison. Additionally, MacCormack pleaded guilty to two counts of exchanging messages, for which she received a concurrent 12-month sentence. This verdict was delivered on Friday, September 13th, marking the culmination of a legal process that exposed the breach of trust and abuse of authority by the prison officer.

Reactions and Consequences

Detective Constable Paula Mowbray emphasized the importance of upholding public trust and the consequences for those who misuse their positions of authority. Mowbray highlighted that while the majority of prison staff carry out their duties with integrity, cases like MacCormack’s should not be overlooked, and law enforcement will continue to investigate such misconduct. She commended the staff at HMP The Mount for their courage in coming forward to provide evidence during the trial, which ultimately led to MacCormack’s conviction. Mowbray reaffirmed the dedication of prison officers nationwide in maintaining the safety and security of correctional facilities, underscoring the gravity of MacCormack’s actions in undermining their efforts.
